The Organization of Tropical Studies is not a conservation organization per se, but a natural resource management that is concerned with environmental outreach, environmental policy courses, reforestation research, and the protection, investigation, and management of buffer areas associated with the field stations.
All three of its field stations are affiliated with the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) to promote interchange of professionals for biological research and education. Constant communication and reciprocal visits of scientists are also promoted between OTS field stations in Costa Rica and those from Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution in Panama.
At the local level, environmental education is vital for the long-term protection of natural resources and biodiversity.
The friendship, trust, and support of local communities are actively sought and secured in order to preserve the natural habitats near the OTS biological stations.
Among other things, OTS serves on private and governmental advisory committees to assist in the management of regional conservation areas, including the critical buffer zones embracing the needs of local communities. OTS regularly schedules public seminars and open houses at our field stations and provides outreach programs that extend to local farmers, teachers, schoolchildren and members of the communities
